Personally Identifiable Information (PII) Legislation Discussed at Recent U.S. House Ways and Means Subcommittee Hearing

June 05, 2023

During session the last week in May, the U.S. House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee held a hearing on Modernizing Customs Policies to Protect American Workers and Secure Supply Chains. At the hearing, Committee Members reviewed a range of customs-connected security issues, including the need to better protect the personally identifiable information (PII) of Americans and others moving into the country. This long-supported IAM and industry backed measure requires PII to be removed from all cargo manifests prior to distribution of commercial data is the premise of both S. 758 and H.R. 1568, The Moving Americans Privacy Protection Act.

At the hearing, commercial data broker ImportGenius voiced their support for the measure, and Representative Michelle Fischbach (R-MN), introduced a letter of support for the Committee’s consideration from House sponsor Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL). In addition to the Committee support received, IAM again joined Worldwide ERC and the ATA’s Moving and Storage Conference in a letter of support and outreach to Committee Members and staff.
