Personally Identifiable Information (PII) Legislation Discussed at Recent U.S. House Ways and Means Subcommittee Hearing

During session the last week in May, the U.S. House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee held a hearing on Modernizing Customs Policies to Protect American Workers and Secure Supply Chains. Top Five News Stories You Might Have Missed

Allied Releases its 2022 U.S. Migration Report

The Allied Magnet States Report tracks migration patterns in the US. Data shows fewer people moved in 2022 compared to 2021. In fact, moves plummeted in every state, resulting in a 20 percent decrease over last year. Rising rents and interest rates, along with inflation and falling wages, meant people moved less in 2022 than they did during the coronavirus pandemic. Those who could afford to relocate, moved south and settled along the Sunbelt, which offered stronger economic opportunities and a lower cost of living than the West Coast or Northeast.

West Coast port labor issues continue as some Los Angeles-bound rail shipments get paused

West Coast ports have seen several supply chain snags arise amid ongoing labor issues. Union Pacific has now halted rail shipments from Denver bound for Los Angeles ports as union workers who specialize in rail shipments are not arriving at the labor halls. The Port of Los Angeles is the nation's busiest port, processing $440 billion in cargo value per year, and is a significant shipping point for the U.S. agriculture industry. Negotiations between the ILWU longshoremen union and the Pacific Maritime Association continue to go on as scheduled this week.

Shippers, regulators muddle through ‘grey area’ of rail storage fees

Shippers are urging Congress to close the regulatory loop for rail container storage fees by expanding the Federal Maritime Commission’s (FMC’s) power so cargo owners can challenge demurrage that’s billed by railroads directly to cargo owners and consignees, but it’s a tall order.
