Introducing Robert Wright, U.S. DAB Vice Chair

Recently, Robert took the time to sit down and answer some questions about himself, his background, and vision for the U.S. DAB as the new Vice Chair. Suffice to say, he’s raring to go!

  1. What is your role at Suddath? Claims Director.
  2. How long have you been there? 3 ½ years.
  3. How long have you been in the industry? I've been navigating the ins and outs of the moving industry for a whopping 26 years now! It all began with Allwright Moving, our family-owned moving company, which started as an Arpin agent and then moved over to Mayflower.
For the first 15 years of my career, I was like a sponge soaking up everything I could about moving. I started off in the warehouse, getting down and dirty with local moves alongside my uncle. From there, I hit the road as a local driver doing short-hauls, and eventually found myself running the show in operations.
At that point I decided that I wanted to stop slinging stick, so I took a little break to get a degree in Business Administration. Once I had that under my belt, I jumped back into the game and ended up crossing the dispatch counter spending six awesome years in the claims department at Stewart Moving.
Then came the big move (pun intended!) – I snagged the role of Claims Director at Suddath, where I've been able to put all that experience and leadership mojo to good use, driving success for the whole team.
So yeah, that's my journey in a nutshell – from warehouse warrior to claims connoisseur. And I gotta say, I've loved every minute of it!
  4. What appealed to you about becoming DAB Vice Chair? Absolutely thrilled about the chance to hop aboard as Vice Chair for the DAB! Why, you ask? Buckle up because I've got a laundry list of reasons!
First off, let me tell you about the mantra that got me into this industry: "We are nothing without the driver." It's a philosophy that's stuck with me like glue, and it's the driving force behind my passion for propelling asset-based companies to the stars.
Now, picture this: a dynamic hub where I can brainstorm with the brightest minds in the biz, champion top-notch best practices, and whip up some seriously slick strategies to rev up growth and innovation. Plus, being Vice Chair means I get to be right there at the steering wheel, shaping DAB's future, singing its praises, and keeping it fresh. It's like being handed the keys to a really cool, industry-changing DAB afterparty, and I am so ready to crank up the fun and professionalism to eleven!
  5. Were you involved with IAM and/or the DAB before taking on this role? Yes, I have had the privilege of serving on the IAM Claims Committee for the past 3 years.
  6. What do you hope to accomplish as Vice Chair? (in 2024 or beyond) As Vice Chair for the DAB, I am committed to championing education and innovation as cornerstones of our mission. I firmly believe that by harnessing the collective expertise of DAB members, we can pave the path forward and elevate industry standards to ensure an unmatched customer experience. Together, we have the power to drive meaningful change and shape the future of our industry.
  7. What do you think are the biggest challenges for the industry in peak season 2024? This peak season presents a distinctive set of challenges, ranging from USTC's fuel surcharge adjustments to special solicitations, along with the necessary preparations to navigate the hurdles that the GHC is anticipated to bring.
  8. What are you passionate about regarding the industry and/or your role in it? My passion for the industry isn't just a flame—it's a roaring bonfire fueled by my unwavering dedication to education, excellence, and innovation. I'm on a mission to take the moving industry to new heights, constantly hunting for ways to amp up service quality, streamline processes, and leave customers grinning from ear to ear.
But that's not all! I'm also jazzed about putting my expertise and leadership skills to work, whether it's rolling out cutting-edge tech, championing industry best practices, or teaming up with other movers to make magic happen. At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to light a spark that ignites real change, propelling the industry into the future and keeping it shining bright.
  9. How can DAB members and Allies increase their participation in the group? Dive into the action with our DMB task forces, where we tackle specific industry challenges and initiatives head-on. It's all about rolling up our sleeves, pooling our expertise, and making big things happen. Be sure to attend our DAB hour webinars and other industry events—these are goldmines for sharing knowledge, making connections, and staying ahead of the curve with all the latest trends.
Plus, let's not forget about our task forces tailored to your interests and expertise. Here, you'll find your tribe, boost engagement, and truly feel like you're making a difference. And hey, in this digital age, why not keep the conversation going on our forums and social media groups? It's the perfect way to keep the buzz alive, spark new ideas, and keep that DAB spirit thriving. Let's make participation the name of the game and watch our community soar to new heights together!
  10. Anything else you’d like to share? Absolutely, I'm thrilled to share some extra nuggets of insight! When I'm not knee-deep in professional pursuits, you can find me lending a hand in various youth organizations. It's not just about giving back—it's about finding fulfillment and personal growth along the way. And speaking of support systems, I couldn't do it without my incredible family cheering me on every step of the journey. Their unwavering encouragement keeps my fire burning bright, both in my personal passions and professional endeavors.
Now, onto business matters—I'm stoked to keep teaching the Qualified Claims Analyst (QCA) course, because there's nothing quite like empowering fellow claims professionals and sharing knowledge to keep the industry moving forward. Let's keep the momentum going!

Engaging Employees: Moving Lives Forward at Apple Moving

At Apple Moving, we believe that a company’s success is not just measured by its profits, but also by the positive impact it creates within its community and among its employees. Our commitment to fostering a vibrant workplace culture extends beyond the office walls. Here’s how we’ve been engaging our team members through various initiatives in January & February:

1. Coat Drive: Spreading Warmth, One Coat at a Time

As the chilly winds of winter swept through our cities, we launched a Coat Drive to support those in need. Our employees rallied together, donating gently used coats, hats, & gloves. The response was heartwarming, and we were able to provide warmth to 516 individuals who faced the cold without proper attire. It’s incredible how a simple act of kindness can make a significant difference in someone’s life.

2. Red Shirt Day for Heart Health: Wear Red, Show You Care

On National Wear Red Day, our office transformed into a sea of crimson. Employees donned their boldest red shirts, ties, and accessories to raise awareness about heart health.

3. Valentine’s Day: Celebrating and Appreciating Teams

Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation. At Apple Moving, we celebrated this day by encouraging employees to participate in Valentine’s Bingo recognizing & encouraging coworkers. This created a ripple of positivity across all our offices. Small gestures of kindness go a long way, and our team felt the love in every handwritten message, treat, or moment of recognition.

4. Apple Annual Meeting: Building Connections Beyond Work

Our Annual Meeting in Austin is more than just a meeting event—it’s a chance for our employees to connect on a personal level. From team-building activities to heartfelt speeches, the gathering allowed us to strengthen bonds, share stories, and envision our collective future with Service at Our Core.

At Apple Moving, we understand that engaged employees are the heartbeat of our organization. By fostering a sense of purpose, community, and well-being, we create a workplace where everyone thrives. Whether it’s through coat drives, health awareness campaigns, or heartfelt gatherings, we’re committed to making a positive impact—one step, one red shirt, and one warm coat at a time.
So, here’s to our employees—the heart and soul of Apple Moving. Together, moving lives forward, leaving footprints of compassion and camaraderie along the way.

DN Van Lines

Bring your GM to work day! In the summertime, you will see me out in the warehouse, burning the midnight oil with the bread and butter of our industry, our operational staff. This photo was taken at 10:00 p.m. on a random Wednesday. The team was working hard to make sure that the nation’s service members were taken care of. We still find time to take group photos, dance to fun music, and laugh with each other. These people make my job the best job in the world!

Emily Leonard, DN Van Lines’ Director of Government Logistics, and members of the operations team in their Stafford, Va. warehouse.

TRANSCOM Announces First GHC Shipments in April 2024

Per TRANSCOM’s 22 February advisory (#24-0044) they will begin executing shipments under the GHC at selected locations in April of 2024. Those will be a very small number of simple, short haul shipments prior to peak season. Per the advisory, the initial phase-in shipments will be less than 1% of the total national monthly average number of shipments. Then, at the conclusion of the 2024 peak season, DoD will continue the phase-in by increasing the volume of shipments moving both at the initial phase in locations and expanding to other locations across the U.S. Per the advisory, they plan to move 20% of the domestic volume under the GHC by December of 2024. Of note, the advisory states that the international portion of GHC phase-in won’t begin earlier than September of 2025.
