Proposed Measures to Minimize Pest Contamination of Containers and the Potential Impact to the Global Moving Industry

The FIDI Global Alliance (FIDI) and the International Association of Movers (IAM) are closely monitoring a set of measures proposed by the World Shipping Council to the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures.

These measures aimed at minimizing globally pest contamination of containers and their cargoes would ultimately be detrimental to the international moving industry by shifting the responsibility for the condition of an empty container to the ‘shipper’ who in many cases is the moving company on an international shipment. These measures would apply to all sea containers packed or empty.

Canada Customs Updates

reports:

When , they must be cleaned and accompanied by a certificate of fumigation. Although this rule has been in effect for almost ten years, it’s never been enforced by .

Therefore, it is now imperative that all shipments destined to Canada that have not yet been packed be cleaned and fumigated prior to shipment or leave the mattress behind. Details of the fumigation procedure used and a statement certifying that the procedure was carried out must accompany the shipment. We are working with our supplier partners to find solutions for shipments enroute.

Supply Chain Update

You don't need IAM to tell you that there is a serious problem in the supply chain. Everyone is trying to get containers from here to there, assuming they can get containers, and whether going by sea, land, or air, it is hard to move anything, and when you do, you can easily encounter extra costs that you have to pass on to the customer. Nobody is happy. It is expensive and time-consuming. When will the situation get better? According to some, . Others say that .
