Ask a DAB

With the current high price and looming price increases associated with packing materials, what are some ways we can remain profitable with our packing services?

By Lakelan Fennell

Packing materials, like many commodities, have seen dramatic price increases in 2021. Pulp, paper and allied products (wood pulp) have seen a 51% increase since December of 2020. These higher commodity prices have lead to drastic increases in the price of packing materials that movers use every day. There are, however, some very effective ways we can manage these increases from the cost side of the business.

  • Shop packing material providers.
  • Fall in love with good used packing materials.
  • Make sure your crews utilize the used packing materials.
  • Use Just In Time (JIT) ordering strategies.
  • Monitor packing material usage and inventory.

Packing materials are an ever increasing cost for movers. Taking some time and focusing on your packing material usage and managing it effectively can lead to tremendous cost savings.

An Introduction to the H-2B Visa Program

By Oded Carmi

While the driver shortage has been a pervasive problem in the industry for seemingly forever, this year domestic asset based movers faced a new challenge, a shortage of local labor. The shortage ranged from packers, loaders, local drivers, to warehouse workers. Many of us have been searching for potential solutions to address the labor shortage. Once such solution to consider is the U.S. Department of Labor’s H-2B Visa program.

The H-2B non-immigrant program permits employers to temporarily hire non-immigrants to perform services in the United States. Not any company can apply for the program. There are specific requirements. Once such requirement is that the employment must be of a temporary nature for a limited period of time such as a peakload need. The HHGs moving industry fits well with this requirement due to our intense summer peak seasons.
