US company sues ‘collusive’ ocean carriers, alleging price manipulation

In a sign of the times, a Pennsylvania-based household furnishings manufacturer has filled suit against shipping lines COSCO and MSC accusing them of backing out of contracts to take advantage of soaring trans-Pacific spot market rates.

FMC Update: Fact Finding Investigation No. 29 Interim Recommendations

Responding to complaints from organizations like IAM, the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has issued its interim recommendations regarding alleged abusive practices by shipping lines and terminal operators in the US around assessment of demurrage and detention fees. IAM has testified several times before the FMC on this issue as part of a coalition of shipper groups impacted by these practices.

Italy Extends State of Emergency

 

The Italian government this week extended the State of Emergency in the country until December 31 and announced new measures to combat the increase in COVID-19 infections due to the highly contagious delta variant.

 

The Italian moving association AITI reported that the new rules that will go into effect on August 6 and includes the increased use of the Green Pass that certifies that an individual has received at least one vaccine dose, has tested negative in the last 48 hours, or has recently recovered from the virus.

 

The obligation to present the Green Pass has been extended from the current requirement to move between regions of high infection in Italy and the European Union to include indoor entry to restaurants, bars, and other entertainment venues.

 

The government decree also extended the requirement for businesses to adopt “smart working” practices, including staggering the start time for employees and where possible carrying out theoretical driver training and other transport courses remotely.

5 People Arrested by Las Vegas Police for Moving Scam

A multi-agency investigation into a scam carried out by employees of moving companies in two states resulted in five arrests this week, according to a press release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

 

In December 2020, detectives in the LVMPD Financial Crimes Section began an investigation into a scheme being carried out by employees of several moving companies and brokerage firms throughout the United States, including Konami Moving and Storage in Las Vegas and Coastal Moving Group in West Palm Beach, Florida.
