IAM Backs Effort To Crack Down on Rampant Detention and Demurrage

The National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) released proposed reforms to the Shipping Act of 1984 this past week. The purpose of these reforms is to address the repeated complaints from Shippers accusing vessel and terminal operators of unfair business practices and excessive charges at US Ports. IAM has worked with NITL and other industry associations in the US to address the abuse of detention and demurrage for several years now and are happy to see these proposals move forward to amend the Shipping Act.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - Current Guidance for Travel to the U.S.

IAM continues to closely follow all guidance and U.S. entry requirements for those traveling (by air) into the U.S., as the association is very much looking forward to hosting an in-person (with an even stronger virtual component), that is accessible and open to all members.

At the moment, there is not an approved "vaccine" passport standard, which would permit travelers to show proof of vaccination from a particular country to gain entry into the U.S. That said, the U.S. CDC currently strongly recommends all travelers to the U.S. be "fully vaccinated" (which would include the time period after the second or first shot, depending on the vaccine manufacturer.)

Labor Department Withdraws Independent Contractor Rule

The U.S. Department of Labor announced the withdrawal of a rule that would have made it harder to prove workers were employees rather than independent contractors under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The rule that was intended to change the definition of independent contractor was published in the last days of the Trump administration. But the Trump-era effort was put on hold by the Biden administration, and the Labor Department issued a proposal in March to withdraw the rule.
