— A panel discussion confirmed that the application of blockchain technology to the moving and mobility services industry may be at a very early stage. Indeed, while the initial excitement of blockchain and smart contract technology may have tempered, our industry has access to current technology which can bring immediate returns in the form of stripping out friction and inefficiency caused by the lack of interoperability between industry software systems.

— IAM recently submitted comments to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on their proposed rule to place more requirements on customs brokerb to verify an importer's identity. In the context of our industry, this rule would require custom brokers in the United States to obtain additional data elements from a transferee that are not applicable to people moving their household goods into the US like the provision of a recent credit report and a copy of the person’s business registration and license with state authorities.

— The IAM-Young Professionals continued its progression toward being a more mission-driven and philanthropic organization, in addition to its historically strong and valuable networking purpose. With over 50 percent of the YP members in attendance, they had a strong presence throughout the four-day event of the IAM 57th Annual Meeting and Expo in Chicago, and used their platform as a force for team building, philanthropy, and environmental stewardship.

— USTRANSCOM Public Affairs published a press release highlighting GEN Lyons’ meeting with CEOs from various moving companies who support DoD household goods movement, and a separate meeting with moving industry trade associations. The press release is not an accurate account of the events of those meetings. Industry attendees believe the tone of the press release implied industry’s support to the general’s decision to award a contract to a single provider. To be clear, most of DoD’s current household goods service providers do not support this initiative.
