— This week, IAM joined nearly a dozen other shipper-based companies, and provided testimony to the Federal Maritime Commission in support of the Detention and Demurrage Petition, currently under consideration. IAM's involvement with the petition filers, The Coalition for Fair Port Practices (CFPP), goes back nearly two years, when informal discussions began among shippers and other impacted by detention and demurrage fees. The Commission asked that a petition be submitted so they could formally consider detention and demurrage practices.

— Honolulu-based Pasha Hawaii today announced that the company has selected Keppel AmFELS in Brownsville, TX, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) for the construction of two new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fueled containerships, with the option to order two additional vessels. Pasha Hawaii is in the process of finalizing contract specifications, and delivery of the first vessel is planned for early 2020.

— Preliminary data from Drewry’s Container Trades Statistics (CTS) indicates that world container traffic surged by 10% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, fuelled mainly by spikes in imports and exports from China. The CTS numbers point to intra-regional trade as the primary driver of growth with volumes up by 17%, versus 7% for deep-sea traffic.

— Dubai ports operator DP World has confirmed that 10 people were injured in an accident involving a container vessel at the Jebel Ali port last week. The incident occurred when the vessel collided with the harbour wall at the port’s Terminal 1 on Thursday, May 4.
